We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Crafting a Push Notification Strategy After NCR Ecommerce MigrationAfter migrating away from NCR Retail Online, many Australian merchants find themselves rebuilding not just their storefronts but the everyday communication channels that keep customers coming back. Push notifications have quietly become the connective tissue of modern ecommerce, doing the work that email blasts and static banners no longer can. Getting this channel right can mean the difference between a recovering bottom line and a catalog that quietly fades into the background. The shift from NCR Counterpoint integrations to platforms like Magento and WooCommerce brings fresh flexibility but also fresh responsibility. Store owners now decide the rhythm, the tone, and the targeting of every alert their customers receive. With Australia's mobile-first shoppers spending record amounts through handheld screens, a thoughtful approach to push messaging pays for itself many times over. Why Push Notifications Matter More Than Ever After the SwitchWhen NCR Retail Online was discontinued, retailers lost more than a checkout engine. They lost the tightly tuned marketing automations that had been baked into the platform for years. Push notifications fill that gap directly, reaching shoppers on devices that travel with them through Sydney's morning commutes and Melbourne's late-night shopping sprees. Mobile penetration in Australia hovers around 90 percent, which means almost every customer is reachable through their lock screen at any moment of the day. Unlike email, push messages do not compete with crowded inboxes or depend on a subject line to survive aggressive spam filters. They appear where attention already lives. There is also a generational reality to consider. Younger cohorts in Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide increasingly skip email entirely, preferring to receive order updates, restock alerts, and loyalty rewards as native push messages. Stores that treat notifications as an afterthought tend to lose those customers quickly to competitors who treat them as a primary surface. Segmenting Your Audience for Sharper AlertsSpraying the same message at every shopper is the fastest way to earn the mute button. After leaving NCR, retailers should build out segments that reflect Australian buying patterns: coastal metro shoppers, regional buyers in places like Cairns or Hobart, and international visitors who use AUD pricing as their reference point. Behavioural segments matter just as much. Cart abandoners, repeat buyers, and first-time visitors each respond to different triggers. A shopper who viewed a product three times in one session likely needs a price nudge, while a long-time loyalist responds better to early access invitations. Demographics and language preferences add another layer. Australia's multicultural buyer base in suburbs like Parramatta or Box Hill often appreciates messages that match the cultural moment or local event calendar. Push notifications that ignore this richness end up feeling like billboards rather than conversations. Timing and Frequency That Respect Australian RhythmsEven a perfectly written message will fail if it arrives at the wrong moment. Australian time zones span AEST, ACST, and AWST, and any national campaign needs to land during a window when the target cohort is actually awake. A 9pm AEDT push in Sydney might wake a sleeper in Brisbane who never bothered to adjust their device clock. Public holidays and shopping traditions shape attention too. Boxing Day sales, Click Frenzy events, and the lead-up to Christmas in December create natural spikes where notifications should be denser and more strategic. Outside these windows, fatigue sets in fast. Most research suggests two to three notifications per week is the ceiling before open rates collapse. There is also a practical reality unique to Australia: the long distances between population centres mean many customers check phones for shipping updates more often than shoppers in denser markets. A well-timed delivery alert from Australia Post, routed through your push channel, can save a customer service call and a five-star review. Crafting Message Copy That Earns the TapWords carry weight when a push message is only ninety characters long. Every line should answer one of three questions for the recipient: what is this, why now, and what should I do. Anything beyond that earns the swipe-away gesture. Personalisation lifts performance measurably. Using a first name in a restock alert for a product the shopper actually browsed can lift click-through rates by double digits. Referencing a local detail, such as a Sydney-based warehouse or Melbourne flagship store pickup, anchors the message in a tangible reality. Visual previews and emojis should be tested carefully. Australian audiences respond well to clean iconography, but overusing celebratory graphics can cheapen the brand voice. A consistent style guide across all messages builds familiarity, which in turn builds trust. Integrating Notifications With Your New Magento or WooCommerce StackThe technical wiring matters as much as the message. Magento offers extensions through its marketplace that connect directly to Firebase Cloud Messaging and OneSignal, while WooCommerce plugins handle similar flows with less developer overhead. Before going live, however, retailers should make sure their historical data is safely archived; reviewing NCR Retail Online backup practices during the transition keeps subscriber lists and segment definitions intact. Once the new stack is humming, training the team on the admin interface becomes the next priority. Internal playbooks should cover how to set up automated triggers, review delivery analytics, and respond to opt-outs. A short guide on getting comfortable with Magento's admin after NCR migration gives staff the confidence to manage the channel day to day. For brands with a deep product catalog, notifications also serve as a merchandising tool. A restock alert on a popular line from the men's shirts collection can drive impulse purchases that would otherwise have been lost to a competitor's search result. Linking notifications to live inventory data ensures the promise of availability matches the warehouse reality. Tracking Performance and Iterating Over TimeNo push strategy survives contact with real customers unchanged. Open rates, conversion rates, and opt-out rates should be reviewed weekly during the first three months, then monthly thereafter. The Australian Communications and Media Authority guidelines on consent also apply here, so documenting opt-in flows protects the business from complaints. A/B testing copy, timing, and imagery keeps the channel fresh. One message might perform best at 7pm AEDT on a Thursday, while another lands harder on a Saturday morning. Treating these experiments as ongoing rather than one-off yields compounding gains. Benchmarking against industry peers provides useful context. Fashion brands, electronics sellers, and home goods merchants each see different baseline engagement. Comparing push performance against email and SMS metrics within the same store helps identify where the channel earns its keep and where it needs a rethink.
The retailers who treat push notifications as a strategic channel rather than a checkbox tend to recover faster after leaving NCR. Australian shoppers reward brands that respect their attention, time zone, and inbox fatigue with repeat business and quiet loyalty. Keep the messaging tight, the timing humane, and the data behind every decision, and the channel will become one of the most reliable lines of communication in the new ecommerce stack. |
